Jack Torrance takes the job as being the winter care-taker of the Overlook Hotel. He takes his wife Wendy, and son Danny with him. When getting a tour of the hotel by Dick Hallorann, he and Danny create a special bond, for they both share a very special ability. Mr Ullman and Dick explain to Jack some of the hotel's history and Dick talks about how sometimes he has experienced some strange odd goings odd there (Room 217). The Torrance's stay at the hotel starts out alright, but eventually Jack and Danny start to experience some of the strange things Dick was warning them about. They both start to see things. Jack starts to get extreme headaches and starts to drink again, and Danny see's two strange little girls, and is horrified by them. Jack's mind eventually starts to sicken within time because of the hotel and all the new "friends" he has made. Overtime Wendy starts to notice a change in him. Tony as well. Tony is Danny's gift or ability, he is Danny's shining. Danny has a vision of redrum and calls on Dick for help. Danny's vision is correct and Jack comes after Wendy and Danny. Dick tries his hardest to get to the Overlook as fast as he can, and eventually arrives just in the nick of time.
CONFLICT:
- A main external conflict is the snow because the family can't really go outside and it takes forever to get to the nearest town.
- Another external conflict is the hotel, because of the boiler and all of the haunted areas.
- An internal conflict is tony because he creates the episodes that Danny goes into, even though they do help him see things.
- An internal conflict would be that Jack is trying to be the best he can for his family, by anger management and sobriety.
