Stephen King's "The Shining" was written after a stay at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado. The Overlook was based upon this hotel. The Stanley has been named one of America's most haunted hotels. It is also known for its architecture, and famous visitors, such as Stephen King. According the the hotel's website it is not unusual to experience supernatural occurrences. As like King's novel, room 217 seems to have more of a paranormal significance than other parts of the hotel. In 1911, Ms. Elizabeth Wilson, an employee, was involved in an explosion during a storm, she was in what is now known as room 217 as it happened and was blown to the floor a story below. She did not parish, but did suffer injuries. Guests that stay in this particular room have come to find that they receive extra housekeeping services. This has been reported from around the 1950's. Other Paranormal activities have gone on as well. Guests and staff have reported seeing "ghosts" roaming the lobby, things getting moved from place to place, lights turning on and off, hearing the piano getting played when no one is there, getting tucked in, hearing a party going on in the ballroom while empty, and on the fourth floor hearing children running and laughing up and down the halls, however no evil supernatural occurrences have been reported there. There are special ghost hunts the hotel has for people interested, and several paranormal investigations have been done here as well.
